Hatching is applied in landscape designs to indicate areas such as paving, mulching, decking etc. The area to be hatched can be formed by a number of entities, but it must be a closed space. The HATCH command is used to start the process, a selection from a series of hatch patterns is made, the scale of patterning adjusted and the selected zone is hatched. The hatch patterns come from a hatch pattern file that has the extension .pat. Hatching in gCADPlus works with AutoCAD hatch pattern files; many of these are available for download on the Internet. The figure below shows a design in which hatching has been applied to indicate lawn and vegetable areas.
The HATCH command can be activated in a number of ways:
- Activate the draw drop down menu and select Hatch,
- Type the HATCH command at the keyboard or,
- Pick the Hatch icon from the Draw toolbar.

We respond to a question regarding hatching ‘shapes with shapes’ in landscape drawings. We create a simple combination of a circle inside a polygon that’s inside a second circle and run through the various options in the HATCH command.
