Equipment Required

Here is a list of equipment to take when conducting a site survey.

  • Your mobile phone.
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Clipboard with several sheets of A4 paper. Printed with a 10mm grid if possible.
  • Scale ruler
  • Large cloth measuring tape (marked in decimal feet – take care in the USA where tapes sometimes have two sides – decimal feet and feet and inches)
  • If you do not have an assistant, a screwdriver is needed to anchor the tape.
  • A smaller pocket tape is used to measure window/door width. The same tape can measure trunk circumference at chest height (calculate diameter), canopy drip line, etc.
  • Electronic laser distance measure.
  • Compass (although a phone app will do it).
